After the Taboreans were left to care for themselves, they began to form alliances, from which eventually emerged states and nations. For the first time in Taborea’s history, culture and innovation flourished. Much of what was accomplished is still known today.
The fastest-growing and most influential Taboreans of the time were the humans. Humans had the most extensive knowledge of the magical runes and could wield an almost divine power. This advanced human civilization — known as the Ancient Kingdoms — lasted almost a millennium.
The Ancient Kingdoms greatly influenced today’s knowledge and beliefs, which is why the time of the Ancient Kingdoms is also referred to as the Classical Epoch.
As the humans’ knowledge increased, so did their power and greed. Small and sporadic conflicts between neighbors escalated into wars between nations, and before too long, the humans began using magic to cause death and destruction.
Humans even challenged the gods. Using the runes, they tried to transform their images, create unthinkable monsters, and enslave dragons and the elements.
A century-long war broke out, and little by little, all Taboreans were drawn into the fight, which lasted until nothing remained untouched. This long war was named after the most terrible of battles: The War of Balanzasar.
Eventually, the enslaved dragons and elements broke their chains and were free again. Because they hated the humans that had enslaved them, before the dragons and elements left for other worlds, they destroyed everything mankind had built. These events are called Heaven’s Punishment.
Although the war had ended, there was no peace between quarreling factions. Nations with any power attacked their weaker neighbors, and the suffering of those attacked was even greater than during The War of Balanzasar.
Some of the stronger nations subdued the smaller and weaker ones and enslaved their inhabitants. The predominance of those stronger nations was only because the leaders had transformed their bodies using the power of the runes. They saw themselves as a new race destined to rule the world. Others saw them as “demons.â€
As soon as the demons started detaching themselves from mankind and looking down on their brethren, the people’s hearts filled with hate, and they found the will to topple the demons. But other Taboreans carried deep scars from The War of Balanzasar, and they had lost all faith in mankind or were so fearful of the demons that they didn’t want to get involved. Thus, the Epoch of Chaos was dominated by demons.
But there was discord and distrust among the demons, and another war began — this time amongst the demons. There were no dragons or elements to stop them. The absolute terror they caused eventually brought forward the alliance, which encompassed all peoples and nations of Taborea, and a plan was put into motion.
The alliance of Taboreans created a sphere, known as the “World of the Void,†and positioned interdimensional portals in the demons’ dominions that would lead to this World of the Void.
A war, known as The Great Banishment, followed. The alliance escalated it on purpose and lured the bloodthirsty demons to the portals. Endless lives were sacrificed to banish the demons one after another into the World of the Void. When the last demon was banished, all portals were sealed.
The method to seal the portals is no longer known, but it was successful at the time. A few demons were left behind, but they had lost all their power and were hunted by the humans. Demons that were not caught escaped into the shadow.
The price of victory for the alliance was immense. Only one-tenth of Taboreans survived, and numerous cultural icons were banished along with the demons.
