NA data center moveFollow

So we have dates for this now. The NA data center will come down on the 15th of May and come back up in its new undisclosed location on the 17th. Midnight PDT both days. Active subscriptions (including free time from the callback campaign) will be extended 1 day for everyone. The JP data centers are also coming down for a day starting on the 16th.

So:
Downtime from 5-15 00:00 to 5-17 00:00.

SE isn't telling us where the data center is being moved to, but it's going to be a tough secret to keep as soon as it comes up. I'm betting and hoping on somewhere in the midwest. Either Chicago or Texas most likely as those tend to be popular spots for large data centers in the US.

Ugh. This sounds like it might get annoying. There's quite a few people playing on the NA servers from for instance Europe. I had almost no lag at all before connecting to Montreal through the big long cable in the sea that didn't get rerouted 400 times before it got to the intended location. I hope that stays the same.

Seeing as how Net Neutrality isn't really a set thing in the US, i hope this will work out well if it gets moved to a US state...

I am extremely skeptical however... If it's not broken, why change it.

Well because it IS broken. Montreal is on the fast eastern end of the continent with a heavy northern bias thrown in for good measure. The latency is absolute murder for anyone living in, say, California... the most populous state in the country. Furthermore their ISP, Level3, is physically and, I think, emotionally incapable of handling their traffic which results in further network issues when the servers are under load.

The changes they want to make in Stormblood also require better hardware than they're running right now, which isn't available at their present location.

They did launch an EU data center a while back so that European players didn't have to be connecting from the other side of an ocean. You didn't want to take them up on that?

That server is in montreal as well, by the way.

That said, i and all of my friends were already playing on my current server well before they went and slapped region stickers on it. Unless its utterly unplayable, there is no reason to break up my family.

Er.. are you sure? I can't find anything on where the EU data center is physically located, but I am seeing a lot of reports of massively improved latency for European players playing on it versus playing on the Montreal servers.

Since i play on Balmung for my alt, I haven't noticed any latency issues actually..surprisingly, it's exactly the same as when I connect to the JP Datacenter from CA. Since I'm hopping between Japan and CA a lot for work I definitely can tell there's some problems, but it's largely people who sadly route through level3 is when latency issues happen.

So this move can (should be) good but America has such archaic infrastructure that they refuse to update because "no money" if you still route through level3 or any older backbone, it won't improve anything sadly, :/ but I have a very good suspicion where SE relocating to based on their recent purchase information lol. It'll be really good for the west coast, but iffy for east coast, maybe they'll update the actual netcode for 4.0 and it won't matter as much.

New data center is in Sacramento, CA.

Which seems like an odd choice to me. Aren't people on the east coast just going to have the same problem people on the west coast were having before?

Continent's like 4000 miles across... maybe somewhere in, oh I don't know, THE MIDDLE OF IT might have been good?

Well, I assume that all the best infrastructure (what good there is in USA lol) would be located there. Are there any actually good places to put a datacenter in the middle of the USA? I can't think of very many overly large cities that would have such facilities 'cept for maybe along the north?

Can't just drop a datacenter just anywhere... you need the actual facilities for it, and a place to host it too.

That said, I live on the East Coast (well, near it...) and I actually saw an improvement (a very mild one) when I was playing this morning. Teleportations, and general hit detection seemed a bit better. Could be a placebo, but it certainly didn't seem worse.

And I'm on 3Mbit DSL, for that matter. I bet someone on something a bit better would have an even better time than I did.

Well, all doomsday predictions aside... it wasnt that bad.

Going from Amsterdam i went from 93ms (Montreal) to about 143ms (Sacramento). A minimal increase in latency. However, due to the better server housing it seems my requests and what not are processed better and quicker than they were back in Montreal. So despite the 50ms increase of latency, it actually feels more responsive.

I can live with this.

Chicago and Houston are both popular places for large data centers due to both strong infrastructure and a centralized location.

I was noticing the same thing. My latency went up very slightly but the connection quality and server responsiveness feels WORLDS better.
