When did we go from using the term...Follow

DD to DPS, ppl always used DD in FFXI (never once have I seen DPS, used in FFXI to describe a DD, it was only ever used to describe their Damage output) while other games at the time did use it, FFXI did not, thus why is it when XIV came around DPS is now the new norm and DD is extinct? DD is a title, DPS is not, "looking for 4 DDs for Ravanna extreme" sounds a lot less stupid then "looking for 4 DPS for Ravanna extreme" "/reply umm you want 4 DPS? Im sure I can do 4 DPS on my level 1 Archer."

Also considering how cool Hive weapons and allagan weapons look. I really hope SE puts more though into 3.0 Relic design, instead of them just being crappy looking, on color weapons that glow (thats a bit of an exaggeration, but even prior to 3.0 there were LOTS of other weapons that visibly look better than relic.) Whereas FFXI relic design was extremely detailed and looked cool/unique, while everything else looked generic in comparison, I mean pick up two level 75 non relic one handed swords in FFXI and tell me how different they look from eachother, now add a relic sword to the mix... and you see huge differences. Whereas FFXIV "yay this weapon I just bought with tomes looks cooler than my relic AND it glows (referring to first gen upgraded soldiery weapons)

Pretty sure because that's the abbreviation SE uses in-game for the red slot with a sword on it.

"DPS" has always been the term in generic MMORPGs whereas "DD" (Damage Dealers) sounds a lot better more logical since you're a Damage Dealer, you're not a Damage Per Second.

The new relics does look decent so far (the mesh is in game now but no textures or actual model) so there's that..but Yoshis aid it's basically 2.0 relic quest again. Hopefully they don't nerf Ravana and Bismarck to at least make the relics a somewhat challenge..but of course...

"Well it has to be nerfed because what about the non raiders blah blah blah."

what do yo mean by 2.0 relic again? I was hoping for a completely different quest (well i know its different but, you know what i mean), like maybe incorporating those new exploration NMs into it...

Also i remember reading that the new relic quests wont be half as time consuming or tedious.. i.e there will be nothing equivalent to farming Light.... and IF there was youd only need like 500 or 1000 instead of 2000

Btw does Foes Requiem do somethin different than I thought it did? I mean if your party setup consist of something like a pld, whm, and 2 brds why does one brd insist that both brds use Foes? I mean, I fail to see the point if theres no BLM or SMN in the party, I mean sure a whm might spam holy but seriously? were mainly using holy for its stuns not its damage output

Basically he said the 3.1 relic quest line will be very similar to 2.0's in nature which makes sense given that 3.0 is 2.0 all over again with Flight. So it's going to have a similar progression pattern, hopefully without the stuff no one ever asked for (grinding obsolete content.) Yoshi says a lot of things though, so we'll see in 2 months.

Well if you have an AST, your WHM is nuking or a SCH foes is still good to play..otherwise, no you don't ever need to use foes (even though it doesn't cut into your DPS.) It'd boost initial DoT damage and WHM's nuke (especially higher up) but not enough that brds NEED to play Foes.

NIN also benefits from Foe's as it makes Raiton worth casting outside of Kassatsu.

Double BRD though? I wouldn't bother.

FFXI wasn't the typical MMO. In most other MMOs, damage is measured in terms of how much you can do over time. Because of the TP system in XI, most jobs stood there auto attacking for a large part of the battle. Other MMOs had auto attack but instead of storing points for a weaponskill to burst, you had access to other skills on cooldown leading to more sustained damage.

Its personal preference and all, but yes we need to educate WoW players that this is OUR game, these are Characters and not Toons. Time to beat that into them one at a time.

i've been on the porch rambling" or "babbling Smiley: lol " about DD and DPS recently. I was telling the young ones how I think DPS came from game parsec programs to look at damage output. and the word changed over the last 3 years. If they look away from those phones and tablets gadget screens and don't walk away I go into tales about RNG was a computer code word and it stood for Ranger for most people. The under five leave when I get to "i bought candy for pennies stories". It seems things was simplified to DPS, Healer and tank is barely holding on.

That's the term that was most common in Japan at the time. FFXI's vocabulary was heavily influenced by the Japanese playerbase.

While "DPS" may not make the most sense when you expand the acronym, it is the correct colloquial today and it's the term that FFXIV in particular uses in-game.

Yeah. We used DD in FFXI mostly because the japanese did (see also: renki, genkai, meripo...)

Preach on!! I use to fight this till I was blue in the face that it makes more sense to say we need a DD. But since the actual dps appears everywhere in the game, I eventually gave up, and now I too say dps. :(

Not too many know this even now, but on the alex savage weapons you get from downing the fourth 4 (which still very few have done) you get a weapon that you can dye, and it glows, and the glow color changes with the dye.

Hoping they do this for the new relic.

DPS is the go to term for most MMO games. DD is the size that matters.

We clearly overruled SE on a lot of things. They want us to use the rediculous term of "toon" to refer to our characters too, but so far no one has ever bothered to call it that unless they were from WoW. Everyone still just uses Character or Char.

DD and DPS is just something that needs more work.

I was not aware SE ever used the term "toon" ... ever. Maybe you could point that out?

Also "toon" has been around a lot longer than WoW has.

Really? I'll listen for it. "Toon" would be kind of an awkward thing to say in Japanese.

Yeah, it's not often but when he says it instead of character you can definitely tell lol.

"Toon" made sense for WoW and other similarly styled games, since they are very cartoony and exaggerated. XI didn't adopt the lingo because aside from the Tarutaru, there was very little that looked cartoony about our realistically designed characters in their realistically designed (even when fantastical) environments.

Yeah, never used toon. Always just said character or char. Then there's that one weird guy that calls them "avatars"

He dated himself. That was the term for all virtual representations of people prior to Everquest when they became "characters." Dreamscape, Cybtertown, World's Chat, and all the other virtual worlds called the players "avatars." There wasn't too much of a backstory to Dreamscape, for example. Not enough to fully justify considering our 256 color sprites "characters."
