I sort of like the fact that I can jump into a battle any of the jobs in FFXIV and have an equal chance to win. But I still wish for the diversity in job/subjob combos you could put together in FFXI.
I suppose it is currently balanced as it is to prevent parties from, for instance, treating beastmasters like they smelled of the dung odor of their pets, or telling blu/thf to go dig a hole and bury himself. As a former blue/thf, it feels great to be able to level anything I want and be generally accepted.
This is the advantage of the current setup. As you mentioned BSTs were rejected and not wanted in any End Game content (at least I never saw it). It became one of those jobs never used. Not forgetting NINs being on
BLMs, THFs and Healers were in high demand. Luckily enough I had those jobs levelled, I did BLM after the TOAU was released so I had no choice but to SOLO > BLM Group later on. Something I don't miss. Problem is though as you have mentioned, you can level - play anything. You can also do End Game as anything (as long as you have the job levelled/know the job).
Having WHM as a job that I knew through and through, 80% of all my End Game was WHM. 19% being BLM/THF and 1% being the job I actually enjoy NIN or RNG.
Only difference now is if I want Instant DF to pop up I can go as a Tank, if I want to wait up to 2 minutes I go as Healer, if I want my DF time to go an average of 15 minutes I go as a DPS.
It was a different type of fun on XI, being a WHM is a prime example. On Sky it was essentially get to camp and stand still while using Macros, only time I moved was AOE casting or KIRIN which was done with kiting. For things like Salvage, Limbus, Sea, Dyna it required a little bit of moving but again tend to find a spot - camp it and cure. As a healer I found any new content very easy because I knew how to do my job. Learning the "mechanics" of the fights was never a requirement, it was essentially "Healer stands here" and "Be aware this move casts paralyze which you need to remove ASAP" or for fun "WHM kites this mob".
Now as a healer especially on COIL, its knowing the mechanics of an entire fight, knowing when to cure, what move does high damage (similar to XI).
T9 being a prime example.... of a multitasking healer...
