FFXI held a press conference today to discuss the future of the game.

The future is not totally bleak, but the beginning of the end is near:

- Final mini expansion scenarios coming out over this year
- PS2 and Xbox 360 support ends next March (so you have one year to get a PC, folks)
- Two mobile versions are planned: A stand alone single player game called Grandmasters set in Vanadiel, and a mobile MMO version set in the current game world, live, with a duty-finder esque system to facilitate parties.

I used to joke that FFXI could run on a cell phone, and it seems SE agreed.

After the final three patches over the next year, SE will continue to provide legacy support to the PC version and their new mobile platforms, but will no longer create any new content scenarios.

You left out the best part... the mobile MMO is being handled by Nexon.

Because if you were somehow curious as to how quickly and thoroughly FFXI could be ruined, now you get to know!

Ok... NOW is the appropriate time for the "FFXI is Dieing!" Threads we saw for the entire midlife of the game.

Well final fantasy 11 obviously isn't making enough profits anymore, let's hope final fantasy 14 doesn't see a similar fate if profits drop.

Haven't played FFXI in a long time... I was always tempted to go back, but the thought of basically starting from scratch with a re-surfaced MMO just seemed overwhelming.

The ultimate money grab would be SE ending FFXI service, then starting up its new mobile MMO that takes place in Vana'diel, and THEN starting up a brand-new updated PC MMO that's based upon the app's lore.

Personally, I'd love to play an updated game in a fully revitalized Vana'diel... but I doubt that's the plan, especially with XIV doing so well.

I went back in November (I think it was November) when they had they're Welcome back to Vana'diel campaign. It was sad seeing so many empty areas, it really felt lifeless. I'm sure the expansion areas were probably more populated, but as a newcomer, that's not what you're going to see. It was great for a bit of nostalgia, seeing the Bastok, Sandy and Windy areas one last time (that music!), but beyond that, ouch.

The game still has a good couple years left at the very least. Are there any other P2P MMOs out there no longer releasing content/updates? I know EQ is still releasing expansions. Diablo 1 and 2 are still played, but those are at no cost (beyond the initial box purchase, which you've probably had for 15 years).

edit: Even EQ is F2P (with a sub option I'm sure)

It's still extremely profitable so that isn't the case at all, it's just SE wants to put all of their focus into XIV. Hopefully now with even less to distract them they'll reevaulate some decisions for HW, like keeping the same progression format for 3.0 that a lot of people disliked in 2.x. Since running 2 major FF MMOs does stretch resources when they originally wanted XIV to take over as the project started as an 'HD replacement' for XI since redoing XI would have been a poor business move.

Nexon I have no issues with because the only game of theirs I played I enjoyed, since I didn't fall into the cash shop trap. They are greedy but in all reality, they can be trusted compared to MANY other companies. They're less greedy than SE is, I mean, SE just got away with reselling the same game for launch price - triple, not counting their mobile ventures.

In 2016 it's very likely to finally go F2P as there were talks back prior to ARR's launch about the possibility.

I don't think its extremely profitable or this would not be happening. There is a fair population but by todays standards still not huge. Not to mention most areas in the game are 90% empty.

I still really like ffxi though, just as much for the memories as the current enjoyment of the game, have a soft spot for it no matter what.

Even though Idon't play it too often as I am usually busy with ffxiv, wow and rift dimensions, I will always stick with it, regardless of any new content or the changes that may come.

As for ffxiv, indeed ftp may be in its future...its in any game futre nowadays. But I certainly do not see it going ftp for many years yet.
IMO though...wow will.

I'm going to have to remember to get back on XI once more for a nostalgia run. Maybe i'll get the new mini's and play for a while. I spent so much time in XI, it will be sad when it rides off into the sunset.

Ok Stuff dont make sence in that article, I think stuff is left out or translated wrong. Why make any app or make it run on a smartphone if you are just going to let the game die.. Why put in a DF?

Quote:
"They are expected to be the final updates"

It does not say it is the final but expected.. Expected by who? SE or who wrote the article.

I am not seeing it.. Why do all this stuff.. Just do the last 3 updates them.. something dont add up..

It doesnt say anymore content anywhere is just says no more story.

From when I watched it it was basically:

"Major updates end after November but FFXI itself will not end. The Mobile client will be made with Nexon. We will continue to improve playability and playing experience on the Windows version even after the major update. However we are ending PS2/360 support next year."

They pretty much stated updates ended in November, in terms of content release. They're putting it what MMO gamers call "Maintenance mode." Meaning it's just going to get touch ups here and there but nothing significant added.

I'm going to be very upset if this last year of content doesn't somehow include Curilla and Trion getting married. Smiley: lol

Nashred, all the sources I read translated it as "one more year of new content to wrap it all up and then that's it, we're done with new stuff." They'll continue to make patches to fix problems with Windows updates, and probably to put seasonal events in, but there will be no 6th expansion for FFXI, and the main story scenario will end.

That could change, of course, if they get a sudden upsurge in interest with the mobile version and subs swell to over a million again. I really doubt that is going to happen though.

You were correct it is dying. Dying according to dictionary.com

Unless you intentionally wanted it misspelled to mock all the badly spelled "FFXI Dying" threads over the years, in which case disregard.

According to the conference digest on SE on forums.

FINAL FANTASY XI's major version updates will conclude with the implementation of the final chapter of Rhapsodies of Vana'diel, but there will continue to be minor version updates that address bugs and contain various balance adjustments.

Conference Digest.

That essentially means that FFXI will go into maintenance mode once the final mini expansion comes out in November. They will balance things out and fix any bugs that may arise, however, will no longer release any content really. Maybe the occasional event content.

Granted that is subject to change if SE feels the need, but I doubt it does.

Catwho, I have a few level 99 jobs in XI (paladin, rdm, blm). But I quit at Aldouin (spelling), and haven't even messed with in-game item levels.

If I were to resubscribe, how hard would it be for me to clear all the storyline content to be ready for the final hurrah?

I never beat two of the three earlier mini expansions, either... are those soloable now?

Well the game is old, I remember playing that when I was with a certain ex and well that was many many many years ago.

It was never going to last forever just like the original CS. Personally I hope they release it opensource/free some way then I may be interested to go back. Its been over a year now since I quit - pretty much not long after the recent expansion pack. Was a special game for me, it was the only MMO that lasted more than a Year for me and I have been through them as well.

The mobile version will be interesting but I am assuming it will be a severe cut down version but who knows.

The PC version may now allow them to tweak in to how they want but again who knows.

Will always miss the Social Side of XI, with long term parties or groups, spending hours in a single zone with a group of people is one thing that XIV doesn't have quite just yet.

IF you can get a group of 5 other people in your situation, you can get iLvl 106 gear in a few nights, and iLvl 113 and 119 gear in a few weeks. I quit in December so I'm not sure if the ilvl has gone beyond 119 since then, nor how to obtain it. All the gear can be obtained by spamming Skirmish and Delve to varying degrees.

I think the 75 content could be solo'd by a 99 PLD/RDM without any issues. You'll need a party for Adoulin content - at least six, but Delve can go up to 18. Some of the Delve fights do better with a small core group than the full alliance, though, due to vicious AOE attacks that require precise timing to dodge.

I went to allot of sites last night to read about this and some of them are saying this does not add up too..

First why launch on a new platform if this is the end? makes no sense.

Why drop ps2 and xbox support? again makes no sense if there are no more updates, not like there is future content that they cant handle. So why leave just PC up?..

The big thing is there is no way to play ffxi on a cell phone even if they can handle it.. It requires a mouse and kb interface or a joystick. really How do you do a bcnm fight on a phone? Not possible.

A few feel something is being left out and I agree.

My bet is the game is being redone to run as a app. The game is going to be shut down entirely and re-released.
One site said they said they are making the game touch friendly.
The two apps are separate from the original game but are based on the world of FFXI and wont be playing with PC people..

This is my guess. I just don't see how an imperfect cell phone interface could keep up with a PC interface. Perhaps the PC version will continue in maintenance mode, and new phone client would get content updates.

And Catwho, booooo! I was hoping the story would be more easily beatable, seeing as how I don't know anyone who still plays. Finding a group in that game was always so difficult.

Beginning of the end? Umm that sounds like THE END to me... after this year why would anyone continue to play a gam that will no longer get new content? They might as well just shut the whole game down after this year

It's just that my friends have all moved on to 14, so I tend to spend more of my time there nowadays. I'm trying to get some of them to come back to at least play out the grand finale. ;;
