Best Job for Soloing AlexandriteFollow

#1 Nov 12 2014 at 11:30 AM Rating: Good
Since my MNK now needs Alexandrite, I'm of course thinking about the Alex maps. I play at hours when there's frequently no-one online in the FC who isn't AFK, so I'd be willing to risk a few failures just to get the successes. My MNK needs some Soldiery gear too, but while I wouldn't spend Poetics or Sands/Oil on a side job, I'd be happy to divert my Soldiery for a while to an Alex job.

So what's the best job for this? My chocobo is Rank 13. I currently have WHM and MNK at 50, with BLM and SMN (and therefore SCH) almost there, and of course I'd be willing to level something from scratch if needed.

Thoughts?

SCH is best to solo with, followed by SMN with titan pet. The dots and heals can keep you up. The only trouble you might have is with the cyclops + adds or the golem + adds. The rest are pretty easy.

I personally do mine on PLD. With my chocobo (rank 8, all skill points devoted to healing, in free stance), I was able to solo the alexandrite maps from I think it was ilvl 100. It's not very fast, but it is consistent. I think I have 11 to go on my shield (finished the sword, yay!).

The thing I found I needed to keep in mind with the ones with adds was to immediately attack the adds when they spawned. The other thing to keep in mind is that the Biast and Drake combination can be tricky because you're constantly moving around because of the breath attacks (and trying to keep your chocobo out of them) but if you go too far from the chest, they'll return to the chest and heal to full.

It might be something to try one or two maps to see if your MNK can do them. I think if you put your chocobo in healer stance, it will heal at a higher hit point threshold and try to stay out of AoEs.

BRD can easily solo them all except the mass spawning ones. I hate that map and the two alexandrite I've lost due to it :p

Having said that, you could always just jump on the FATE train with your weapon equipped and collect seals for ventures while hoping for drops.

I've done it as BRD and DRG. Both work, but since BRD can kite, it's a bit easier.

Ive done all the different kinds of maps as a PLD and only one is a bit tricky. None of them should give you trouble. The only slightly tougher one is the one that pops bombs to explode on you. Drag the main mob away from the swarm of bombs. When you see them run at you, pop a cooldown. When the second wave spawns do the same thing. I like to use invincible first then sentinel. Invincible isnt necessary. I have never been close to dead on anything ever. My ilvl when i started doing it was in the low 90's. Dont even need a chocobo.

Because of how disadvantaged positional jobs like MNK are when they don't have someone tanking for them, I definitely wouldn't advise using that one, although I'm sure you still could as long as you had a Choco Cure capable chocobo (whew)

It's hard for me to say what necessarily works best, but I can definitely say that MNK is disadvantaged solo because of the positional factor. Any time I've had to fight stuff alone on my MNK it just felt weak. NIN for instance would do a far, far better job at fighting solo (or with a chocobo), and it would even be able to make use of your MNK's gear (but not its accessories)

SMN has an advantage in a built-in tank of sorts in Titan-Egi so you may find that helpful to use until you've learned what each potential alexandrite fight is and how they all work.

I've done them all as MNK, the ones that spawn several mobs can be tricky, though doable with some reasonable planning. That being said, some are cutting it close compared to other jobs that the others have pointed out. Since mnk was my best geared job though, I did it with it and really had no problems.

Any job can do them, but definitely agree with the above mentioned Scholar. Scholar for maps is pretty much easy mode and you don't even need to worry about heals. Place Selene off in the distance so she's not in the way of any AoE and just DoT, DoT, DoT. The fights are short enough that you can just spam Ruin II and smack things around with your book. Plus you don't even have to move on the Malboro fight with Selene; since she works best on auto-firing abilities she'll silence Bad Breath and trivialize the fight.

For ease and minimal risk of dying Scholar's pretty damned hard to beat.

I've used my white Mage for this. No chocobo. Just a bunch of holy spam and a few dots and a regen if necessary. I've walked away from a few fights with not a hit on me (gargoyle type mobs).

Yeah in general..any can solo, it depends on what you get, even the ones with billions of adds is possible on any. This game is largely tuned for solo play when it comes to the overworld.

Solo'd BRD on most of mine, even the mass spawning ones - with Choco Heals.
Came a bit close because I got hit with status, they all went for the choco and then me. I lived but I tend to go War+Choco and it's very easy.

I have solo'd all as blm with Rank 10 chocobo set to Healer. Good for the cyclops and Golem fights. Harder on drake and biast fights.

To rouse my own thread, I have followup questions. I've been doing maps on WHM with chocobo, and breezed through the golem + bombs last night like it was trash mobs. In the meantime, I've been working on how to play SCH by running Low Level Roulette, where I can get the feel without threatening other players' success because Eos could solo heal trivially if I mess up. And I really want to take on fights in the open world on SCH because it seems it would be awesome fun.

But I can't make the conceptual leap from Heal/DoT dungeons to taking on a crowd solo in a pressure situation with limited kiting range. I could have SCH'd the Eye pretty easily, I imagine, but how would I have handled the golem map fight on SCH? What about the four biasts/drakes, which was the previous one I WHM'd? Those guys hit moderately hard and move very fast, with lots of overlapping AoEs to dodge or soak.

I'm missing some clue. The only AoEs are Miasma II and Bane (and Blizzard II cross-class, but it's no Holy either). How do you do crowd control when you have a lot of adds to deal with? Maybe in my case the job should be called Dunce rather than Scholar, because I really am having trouble seeing how to do this. The ironic thing is my iLvl on SCH is 106, higher than my WHM iLvl because I have the full Book of Diamonds. This should be really easy, and it seems impossible.

You forget that while the mobs may slap you around a little, you have a fairy with you to manage keeping you alive for you. For the Golem/Bombs, simply pick the most central bomb, dot it up, bane it, Miasma II if you want, and spam Blizzard II until they all die. For the cyclops with the mob of peapuks, I find it easier to just spam Blizzard II, Miasma II, and Shadow Flare since Bane won't hit all of them. From what it sounds like, you haven't actually gone as SCH against these yet. I believe you're underestimating the strength of your dots and overestimating the hp of the monsters in these maps.

Don't forget about Bane aswell. You have a lot of single target DoTs, spread em around a bit :)

Thanks! It sounds like my biggest problem is lack of confidence. Smiley: laugh I think that's the clue I needed.

Not to mention you can place Eos/Selene near the bombs and they rush her since they'll have the most hate on them from curing you. Not that Eos/Selene will die anyway due to the reduced damage they take.

I started doing these again after giving up on them for a few months. With current level gear (i110 with one or two i120) on PLD these things are an absolute breeze. Nothing like how they were when i last did them. It used to be that you survived most things, just had 10 or so seconds left at the end of it even with your chocobo out.

Now i finish it with 2-3 of the 5 minutes remaining. Barely lose more than 1000 HP. It's not quite the challenge it was before, atleast on PLD.
