Purchase the Warrior Role Trait from Will, then talk to Tom to slot it, then use your skill to call forth your Warrior.
Will and Tom are outside of the Prancing Pony. They want to help you upgrade your soldier by allowing you to purchase and slot a role trait enabling him to be a warrior.
