Here's one thing I'm pretty sure about: Lots of people will dump trump given some one else they could vote for; Mayor Pete is not that person. Homophobia is still mainstream in some parts of this country. I'd say the same about the women except that it's 'ok' mostly everywhere in the country to let women to be leaders.

Even if that person has (fairly recently!) argued for further restricting immigration and nationalizing major industries? I know that there are very few true swing voters out there, but Bernie scares me as much as Trump, just in different ways. When Bernie says something, I know that he believes it with absolute conviction, and it's frightening.

I would support universal healthcare if we were building a new country. Under our current infrastructure, such a massive change "over an election" is reckless. We can have the same outcome in smaller steps.

Bernie doesn't scare me. But his hard-core base seems as unreasonable and unwilling to unite as trumps hard-core base.

Funny thing is, I wouldn't call trumps base the 'far right' and I'm not sure Bernie's base is 'far-left'. Maybe they're just far-out - man. [:flowerpower:]

Yes, cheering when your candidate discusses murdering people in broad daylight simply to show he can get away with it is moderate right. I'm not even being sarcastic, that's what the standards for the right in the U.S. are at now.

Yeah, who doesn't want to overthrow the economic status quo for the last several hundred years, which has directly resulted in a massive, worldwide reduction in poverty and standards of living previously thought impossible? Fuckin' pussies, that's who!

Despite it's obvious benefits, the world is not the same as it was lo those many years ago. Times change, we need to adapt or die. You are seeming to suggest that we have reached the pinnacle, but what if we can improve the state of the world to the benefit of more people?

I'm sure the system of government which has never succeeded anywhere, ever, will be the best way forward for the future. Smiley: nod

Basic market forces haven't changed though. Consumers want better products at lower prices. Businesses want to make the biggest profit possible on the products they sell. Employees want the most salary for the least time/effort. Employers want the most labor output for the least cost.

These basic forces operate the same. Haven't changed. Aren't likely to any time soon. Socialism as an idea has existed since the beginning of the industrial revolution. It's been tried many times. Every single time it's actually been implemented it has resulted in a reduction of productive improvement, reduction of relative standard of living for workers, and an increase in authoritarian control over those workers (ie: less liberty).

It's extremely telling, when the biggest concern over socialism is the things that said authority will do with it's power once it has purchased it with promises of free education, free housing, free food, free health care, etc, that the current proponent of said system openly states that the fact that Castro was a brutal dictator is somehow offset by the fact that he improve literacy in Cuba. Um... That's exactly the problem. The "cost" for that is having to live under authoritarian rule, and just kinda hoping that it doesn't result in gulags or something.

Mayor Pete and Klobuchar are out. After Warren (and Tulsi, lol) concede, the youngest candidate in the race will be Donald J. Trump.

Great job, Dems. A+.

No, your whole country is a gerontacracy. Sorry no-one told you in small enough words for you to get it, sport, but we all have our failings. Mine is that my **** gets sore after the seventeenth supermodel.

To keep things real, I think it's really swell that the winnowing of the forum population to the handful of degenerates still with us has led to a better political balance on the forum.

I think that's really great, and not terrible at all. I really respect people with right-wing views, and I would never compare their intellects to those of oysters unless it was very much to their advantage.

I'd suggest that most cultures throughout history tend to favor putting the serious decisions in the hands of the elders, assuming they are wiser than the young. We can debate how valid that is in terms of modern politics, but to simply dismiss leaders because they are old kinda does fly in the face of the norm. The only issue is that the Democrats make such a big deal of "old white men" running things, yet they can't seem to get away from it themselves.

If it takes 17 to get sore, then maybe there's a whole "loose fit" issue going on. Wouldn't necessarily be bragging about that.

We all like to feel like we belong.......

I voted for Liz. I knew it was a lost cause but it still felt good.

We Mainers got this ranked choice voting thing going, but it's use in this primary was compromised away. We will be using it in the presidential election. I'm having a hard time imagining 'ranking' trump on the ballot (no worries - I won't).

Will Ol' Joe be able to rise above Burisma, refrain from taking trumps bait, and also remember what day it is - until Nov. 7th?

Warren's officially out (Smiley: cry).

Is it too soon to think about a running mate; Assuming Biden is the D-nominee, who shall run alongside him?

Warren
Abrams
Buttigeig
Harris
O'Rouke
Who else?? (If anyone says Clinton they have to take a drink)

Pros and cons?

Usually I'd say: who cares? But there's no chance old man Biden escapes the coronavirus for long, so this is actually pretty important.

Warren is too stupid. Buttigieg is just a younger, gayer Biden without his modicum of charisma. Harris is a massive liability for no real gain. That billionaire would be a good choice, if he's willing to finance the campaign, except he's going to end up pres when Biden croaks, so - no.

Warren Stupid? She sure didn't appear to be stupid at her rally in Va. Her problem was that most people are still not ready to vote for a smart woman who speaks her mind and persists.

While Biden was far from my first choice (Warren) I just can't see Bernie in the White House getting things done to repair the damage that 45 has done to both our country and the world.

Warren is a boring technocrat who decided for some reason that her best path to victory was to get woke and to release reams of fantasy policy proposals that had exactly zero chance of becoming reality. The math typically added up (even if some of it came from magical hand-waving), but the details staked out the middle ground between Biden and Bernie, so they didn't appeal to voters from either side. Her only solid voter base was the journalists and academics who remain employed by breathlessly parsing and carrying water for her every new wealth tax or task force. She's not stupid; she's a poor national politician.

Also, the implication that she only lost "because sexism" is itself pretty infantilizing. She's a big girl who can fumble away easily winnable primaries all by herself.

Michelle Obama, obviously.

Warren probably never had a serious chance of winning the primaries. Her best hope was a brokered convention where she could convince the party leaders and delegates that she was the best compromise between Sander's progressive policies and more moderate pragmatism. I question whether or not she'll be in serious contention for the VP slot given that her replacement will be appointed by Republican governor Baker. If, by chance, Democrats hold the Senate by more than a seat or two (unlikely given the map), she might get a nod for a cabinet position.
