I got the email as an ex-subscriber to DAOC, 'come back for a free week, till we shut the servers down'. I've not played the game for years, but I did have a happy 4 years as a Hibbie, and am sad that it's about to die. DAOC had the best implementation of PVP with RVR. Just a shame that it's going away now. Farewell DAOC, thanks for the fun, /salute.

Well I hope DAOC will still exist a few years...
I stopped playing it a while now, but I guess I'm gonna start replaying it in a while.
There are many good games, but there is no game compared with DAOC!

I see there are quite a lot players still on the Ywain cluster, I hope they will remain there for a few years...
Cuz if DAOC would die it would be a great loss!

Hopefully not while i am still alive. Six years and counting, and with over 100 toons, I will be here for quite awhile, have to, still trying to be mediocre at the game. Rofl
All you old gamers come on back, RvR is still good, although high RR stealthers are about ruining the game. And Geharis is alive and well.

I joined about 6 months ago as a newb (after sampling a bunch of the best-reviewed MMOs and finding none that came close to DAoC for quality), and it's never struck me as a dead game. When I was lvl 1 or now that I'm 50+ and taking towers. True, the game may get terminated abruptly -- plugs get pulled on games all the time, and only the companies running them know when -- but for now, at any given time I log on, there'll be about 2,000 other players on; 3,000 or more at peak times.

As for the players -- I know many who've been around since beta, or nearly, and see newbs running about who're much newer than me. (Which is a sign of game health; since there's always attrition, newbs are what guarantee that the player base continues to exist. Those who think a game would be better without them fail to grasp that a game is doomed without them; and when a company sees it's not attracting or keeping new players, that's when it pulls the plug and turns its resources to its viable projects. So tolerate them, teach them, and they will cease to be newbs as all we high-level players did, and keep thegame alive a while longer. -- End lecture. :)

DAOC has not left and is still very much alive. Just been a lot of changes with servers to restructure a bit.

I was contemplating coming back to DAoC. I've become rather bored with World of Warcraft as of late. I was just curious what server you guys would recommend starting off on? I have not played the game in about 8 years. I would be starting over from scratch so I'm unfamiliar with the expansions & new classes. Any information you guys could provide would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.

It does not matter for BG's and RvR NF as all servers are linked - I would suggest that you check the Camelot Herald housing site and see where housing is available. If you plan on transfering your toon, I would suggest one server for Hibs, 1 for Mids and 1 for albs. I have hibs on y4,7-10 Mids on 1 & 2 and Albs on 3, 5,6. Note also that the homeworlds as connected - so alb and go to Y1 thru y 10 and play in any of the homeland areas. DF is linked to NF and whoever owns it owns it all on y1 thru 10. Hope this helps.
GL and welcome back

PS if your coming back you should be able to trf your old toons from the old servers. the Herald will explain how.

DAoC is alive on well on its last remaining server.

There is really only one server left, Ywain. As the poster above said, you actually have to choose Ywain1-Ywain10, but the 1-10 are just for housing. All other aspects are shared. Only Ywain1 housing is close to being full. It is easy to get premium housing lots in any other zone.

As for changes to the game in 8 years, the game is only 8.5 years old, so if you have not played since 2002, then there are too many changes to name.

The most important things for newer players to know now, is that most top end gear can be purchased now through using Bounty Points (accumulated from doing RvR), Scales (items dropped off of monsters in certain zones and easily farmable), and Glass (again, a form of currency dropped off mobs in the game's Trial of Atlantis area). All the items purchased through these forms of currency are tradeable, so you yourself do not have to have BP's to wear the BP items, just know someone who has a lot of BP's and is willing to buy it for you and trade/give it to you.

From a mixture of player crafted and BP/scale/glass items, even a newer player can get a template that is comparable to the best in the game. The only super top notch items that are not purchaseable are Master Level 10 items (currently the best in the game) and some periodic limited time drops (such as Halloween quest hats and the Medal of Honor quests).

The community is not what it once was b/c you no longer need the community to succeed. Almost everything can be done by yourself, so large scale PvE raids are very rare. RvR is still very active on all 3 sides, and no side has any clear dominance over the other two. In fact dominance usually changes over the course of the day as population shifts I guess from realms that have higher European populations to the realm that has the highest US primetime population (Alb).

Oh, and as for the expansions, there is only one game now, so if you go to the herald and download the game, that is it. You will be patching for a long time bringing you up to date, but there will not be anything else you need to purchase except the monthly fee. As for the original post, I doubt there was any email that said "come back for a free week until we shut the servers down".

The population is healthy on the one server thats left... Problem is they cant merge with anything else now... All former servers and the EU people are now in the number - its all thats left really.

The good thing - Plenty of people, and always someone online due to US+EU timezones.
The average thing - last 1-2 years the number has been the same.
The bad thing - Nothing left to merge with, should the amount lessen.

(I fear when Diablo 3 hits, we gonna loose quite a few of the remaining, since many DAOCers are old D2 and EQ players)

my friend and i used to play DAoC a lot then we stopped for EQ2, DnDOL, AoC, LOTROL, WHOL, u name it.

my friend tried to come back but being english we used to play on euro server but he tells me that server is gone and support for euroes is gone and payment method for euroes gone, just deadlinks and disconnect phone numbers.

so what must one do living in england if u wish to play DAoC /get your toons back?
