Beta Journal: Crafting

The web team for the Lord of the Rings Online has published a beta journal on crafting! In the entry, one beta participant discusses his experience with the intuitive crafting system in the game. A snippet is below:

I've been a big fan of crafting, ever since the tradeskills in Asheron's Call. Crafting in AC2 occupied my time for hours on end, both before and after the big changes! I was looking forward to crafting in LOTRO.

Well the big patch of March 07 has come and gone.

As of now I have mixed reviews about it, mainly the way they nerfed the heck out of the in game currency.

Before I continue please let me state that I completely agree that there was a need for the change, once people found out how to make the money they made it very easily.

For example, one could earn 178 silver on a stack of 50 raspberries
I could farm 10 fields and harvest about 200 raspberries. That’s 712 silver. Granted at mastery level the fields would cost me around, 250 silver to plant.

Still that was a net profit of 462 silver. Not bad, not bad at all but it was extreme and I will be the first to admit it. Allow me to repeat that.. …but it was extreme and I will be the first to admit it.

As it stands now, the current market price for a stack of 50 raspberries is 6 silver.

SIX SILVER. It cost 50 silver to plant ONE FIELD. If I’m lucky I can harvest 40 raspberries from one, (chance of 2 in 10, average is 5) Even with me selling the seed, (which would be pointless) I still loose 35 silver per field. (close guess-ta- mation)

Here’s the kicker, the cost of supplies do NOT reflect the current currency change. They have remained the same as before the patch.

What I would like to see is one of 2 things.

Change the supply cost to reflect the current market price

OR

Increase the profit index what people should make on their product.

ie: If it cost 50 silver to produce, they should make at least at 20% of their initial investment. A gross total could be around 70 silver (this could even fluctuate depending the crafter skill, if they have master it or not.)

With this formula one could expect any where from 10 to 30 silver profit. Hey at least you are not loosing money.

Quests
The coin given for a completed quest should at least cover the cost of armor/weapon repairs. I’ve heard of folks getting 75 copper from a quest they paid 13 silver to repair their gear. That’s insane.
