A while back there were rumors of Matthew McConaughey playing Flagg on a remake of The Stand. Now he's been confirmed as playing the Man in Black in a Dark Tower movie. And Idris Elba is going to be playing Roland.
I've only read the first three books. But I wonder how Roland will work as a black man?

Should make a good movie I'd think, I do hope you're kidding about McCaughey though. Can't see him as "the man in black". As for who plays Roland; I'll get all soapboxey and state I don't see what skin colour has to do with it.

I don't know which book they will start with, or which ones they will cover eventually. But in something like two thirds of the second book, the skin color of Roland (and a couple other people involved) is pretty critical to the characters. A crippled, black civil rights leader is abducted by Roland. She happens to have multiple personalities. One of which hates white people passionately. The interactions between Roland, his partner (also white) and her two selves were a huge part of the developed story of the character. Seems they could ignore or gloss over these relationships, but it feels like the depth of the secondary character could suffer from it.

I have less issues with the casting news than I have with King mentioning they're not adapting The Gunslinger first and will instead, I assume, start somewhere around book 2. Granted, The Gunslinger is the shortest of the Dark Tower books but its kind of neccessary to setup both Roland and Jake...
Also, Ryan Reynolds must be cast as Eddie. Minus the heroin addiction, Reynolds is perfect.

Or... They'll just swap the races around entirely, and make her a white racist who hates black people. Maybe change "her" into "him", complete with pro-Bundy/militia t-shirt or something. Makes for a more socially conformed narrative that way.

As for skipping the first book, that seems odd. The first two books could probably be condensed down pretty well into a single movie. Doesn't seem like it'd be that hard to do.

Aaron Paul has been cast, presumably as Eddie Dean. Probably an even better choice than Ryan Reynolds.
