Yahya Abdul-Mateen revealed what his Black Manta costume will look like in Aquaman.

Keith David joins the cast of Freeform's New Warriors in a yet unnamed villainous role described as "a caustic municipal employee who butts up against the hopeful energy of the New Warriors.". Which sounds about as evil as Newman from Seinfeld, but Keith David has a great voice so that alone is worthwhile. Might be better than I initially figured it would.

First look of Zazie Beetz as Domino in Deadpool 2. I can't say I'm not disappointed at the decision to completely abandon source material for the sake of political correctness, but Zazie is a pretty good actor in Atlanta and if the script is any good then I'll just bite my lip over it. So, ignoring the SM I'll say that she does look good in the outfit.

Preacher was good. Herr Starr was a refreshing change to the last few episodes. When he grabbed the golf club(? I think) and beat the guy. Then his "romance". And the predictable ending of the test with him shooting the last competition. I did not actually think he was going to kill the head guy that way until just before it happened as they panned away from the balcony.

Dark Tower. A lot more trailers and snippets playing this week. And one of the snippets I saw had shown twin children. That is a good / bad sign. It's one of the better books of the series (probably my favorite), but it's also book number 5. Which means they really are going to mash up all seven books into a blender here and pour out this hour and a half long movie. Guy in charge did an AMA apparently, and said that he wanted more movies, with the missing characters. But if this first movie covers so many aspects of the books, I cannot imagine sequels working well. The characters he claims to want to add to sequels are kind of key characters in the events he would have already covered. I think he just did those answers on the AMA to appease the questioners, knowing that another film is likely never happening.

I'm still going to watch it Saturday.

I lost it when he walked back on screen with the golf club and started waling on the guy. And that episode was just to introduce the character. Pretty good, got the spirit of the character at least. Everything else about the episode was pretty forgettable.

Hartley Sawyer has been cast as the Ralph Dibney, the Elongated Man for the next season of The Flash. Dibney is a detective with Mister Fantastic-like abilities to stretch his body. He'll be joining Neil Sandilands as The Thinker, Kim Engelbrecht as The Mechanic, and Danny Trejo as Breacher, who I know even less about but come on. Danny Trejo.

Jessica Chastain confirmed on twitter that she'll be playing Lilandra, the Shi'ar Empress and main villain of X-Men: Dark Phoenix. Also on twitter, Dave Bautista says he'll be playing The Eternal Warrior for the Valiant Shared Universe. Didn't even know Valiant still existed, but all the more power to them. They're also making Shadowman, Harbinger, and Bloodshot movies, the last possibly starring Jared Leto.

Hellboy: Rise of the Blood Queen adds Mr Wednesday Ian McShane as Professor Broom, the main character's adoptive father.

Roughly sixteen days until Netflix's The Defenders releases.

So the annual CW Cape Crossover event has been announced for November 27th and 28th. Supergirl and Green Arrow, followed by Flash and Legends the next day. The crossover is introducing Jes Macallan as Special Agent Ava Sharpe, who is "A hard working agent for a secret branch of the Federal Government (the Time Bureau) dedicated to the regulation of time-travel and the protection of history. She is very smart and incredibly ambitious and always believes she is the smartest person in the room. She is often quite ruthless in obtaining her goals and her drive for perfection has left many discarded friendships (and relationships) in her wake."

Here's a better look of Zazie in costume. Hopefully this is beta and not the final.

From what I'm reading about The Dark Tower it sounds like it's a good enough movie for casual movie-going but not much of a franchise launcher.

Teagan Croft has managed to secure a coveted role of series regular Raven in Greg Berlanti's upcoming Titans show in 2018, which will be on a "direct-to-consumer digital service." Robin/Nightwing should be named soon enough, and I'd assume Starfire, Beast Boy, and Booyah Cyborg won't be long after. Croft is 13, so I imagine everyone except Cyborg will be around that. Cyborg, of course, will be in his 40s.

Season 3 of Legends of Tomorrow will apparently be more occulty than sciency, and there's rumors that Matt Ryan will be brought in for a guest appearance or two. He's a great Constantine and it stinks that the best they can do with him is a yearly cameo. Also rumored is that the Kree will play a role in Season 5 of Agents of SHIELD. It's about time we get some more answers over the blood.

Some reviews are in for The Inhumans and according to them it's "atrocious," and "Scott Buck's worst work." I'm kind of not surprised after those trailers.

Unrelated, Netflix has announced a brand new true crime series called American Vandal, which will be an eight half-hour episodes series about the aftermath of a costly high school prank that left twenty-seven faculty members' cars vandalized with phallic images. Yes, it's satire.

The 4 part "Night Begins to Shine" TTG episode wasn't that bad. But Cartoon Network can seriously start showing something other than TTG now.

I am still going to see The Dark Tower tomorrow. But I know I won't like it as anything based on the books. The other day when I thought I noticed twins during a trailer I was half paying attention to, turns out it was two twins, the same sex. And that part in the books I thought it was based on, the twins are always opposite sex. That piece in the trailer was apparently just a reference to the twins in the Shining. So... nothing good so far.

Voltron Season 3 on Netflix today. I liked the first two seasons enough, I'll tune in and watch this one.

The Mist: If I'm not the only one watching... Part of me thinks that the gay friend is the one that poked her while she was passed out, in some sort of self hating confusion. He seems to be into self hatred. Some subtle hints as he was confessing his sins to the priest. Or as he watched her father describe what he wanted to do to the person who raped his daughter. But both scenes have other explanations given. He was playing the priest for the keys, he was truly shocked by the father's words, etc. I still think it'd be a good twist if the jock really didn't do it, and the best friend who did it.

The priest being taken out by the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse was a nice touch.

Still hate the mother's character though. I hope she doesn't make it.

Dark Tower: I enjoyed like... the middle 50% of the film. And the ending was rushed. Seems clear they did it so it would sort of "stand alone" if nothing else comes from it. Disappointing. In the end it was less "Dark Tower" and more "Stephen King Name Drop: The Short Film".

Theater had technical difficulties and only got to see a couple trailers. They reset things and took about 25 minutes to get the movie playing. So they ended up fast forwarding thru most of the trailers to catch up. Only notable one was Stephen King's IT. At least that one is an easier adaptation. Only a single (if very long) book that's already been adapted to film.

Even people who know nothing / care little about the Dark Tower series will likely find this movie rushed and disappointing.

Edit:

Looks like Dark Tower is getting a TV series. But it will cover one of the Flashback books in the series, Wizard and Glass. Which covers an adventure that Roland had in his very early Teen years. It was up there on the top of my list of books. Wolves of the Calla being top of the list, and Wizard and Glass being second.

They say that Idris is committed to the series. I hope that he's not the "main Roland" though. I'd hate to have that story rewritten to cover a middle aged Roland instead of a Teenage Roland. That would just ruin the feel.

Also, Voltron Season 3 was good. But too short. Half the length of the previous seasons. But very little filler. 4th season isn't very far out either. Sometime in October. Seems more like a "part 1 and part 2" of Season 3, but they did call it Season 4 in the trailer.

First official look at Brolin as Cable in Deadpool 2: Electric Boogaloo. And a closeup of his face. Definitely offsets the disappointment I feel in Domino. Evangeline Lilly took a picture before filming of Ant-Man & The Wasp starts. Thems some jacked up arms.

So this is a thing.

Preacher: I'm feeling like Hell's Waiting Room is kind of bringing down the whole image of Hell for me, but that Advanced Hell section certainly was brutal. Hopefully this B-Story leads somewhere, unlike in the books where Arseface is pretty irrelevant to the goings-on of the main narrative. The rest of the episode was painfully drab.

Batman vs Two Face gets a release date. Adam West's last voice role as Batman will be released October 17th.

Karl Urban confirmed that he's talked to the people in charge of the Judge Dredd TV Spin-Off show Mega-City One, stating "I am in discussions with them about that. I told them that if they write the material and give Dredd something to do and give him a function, I will be there. I would love to." I thought he was a good Dredd, so having him back would be a definite plus.

Mist: Very surprised that my impression of the gay friend turned out correct. Didn't think they'd actually make him a bad guy. Turns out he did rape the girl and frame the jock. But not out of sexual confusion. He straight up hated the jock and didn't want his friend to like him. So he did it so she would end up hating him.

Mother still worst character in show.

I expected he was going to be a bad guy of some sort (I kind of expect it of everyone in this show), but I didn't expect that.

According to Joe Morton, who plays Cyborg's father in Justice League, some of the Whedon reshoots revolve around the middle-aged-guy-pretending-to-be-a-teen to lighten the movie.
Morton wrote:
I know that with Ray [Fisher], the young man who plays Victor, there were some adjustments that they made in terms of the tone of that character. I think what I heard was that there was a need from the studio to lighten up the film in a way, that the film felt too dark. I don't know what that meant in terms of how it actually got translated in terms of the reshoots but that's what I heard. That's what I thought some of the reshoots were about.
I'm expecting more Booyas.

Tim Miller about Arnold Schwarzenegger's role in Terminator 6 wrote:
Yeah, you got to ask yourself, ‘Why did they make these characters look and sound like Arnold? There has to be a reason. So yeah, it has flashed through my mind that there has to have been a prototype. There has to have been a guy who’s DNA was harvested from – that they grew the organic outer layer that they grew the Terminator from…and that presumably was a real person at some point. Now, the question is, did that person have some sort of meaning to Skynet on WHY they chose that one (Arnold)? Or was it like a whole rack of Terminators and the one that happened to be the Arnold model just happened to be closest to the door going out to the time displacement center and all the others looked different? I’ve asked myself these questions but it’s never been resolved…so stay tuned!

Set photo leaked on reddit for Ant-Man & The Wasp, this time a van that is an Easter Egg slash Homage to a van in Nick Spencer's recent Ant-Man book. Which, hell, that book was great so I hope they take more from it. I'd squeal in the theater like a schoolgirl if they brought in Grizzly. From this we can speculate that Scott's new job for the next movie is to test people's security systems and possibly upgrade them afterwards. Also X-Con: Antony Unknown

Final trailer for Friday's The Defenders.

Speaking of Friday, The Hitman's Bodyguard looks like the kind of movie I'd enjoy but not in a theater.
Jon Bernthal wrote:
It’s an interesting predicament. To put [the Punisher] as the central character is interesting, I think that my big struggle with him is that one of my biggest kind of things that I’m always fighting for on set is, I always want to preserve the essence of Frank, and have the right and be bold enough to really turn my back on the audience, and not do things to win the audience’s favor, but rather stay true to the character and the essence of who he is.

So I think that’s the real challenge: being bold enough to not make him too heroic, at least ‘heroic,’ is important to me. That being said, I think there’s Frank Castle inside of everybody, I think being a father and being a husband, he’s a character that I deeply empathize with.
Have I mentioned how much I like Bernthal as the Punisher? Might be the best thing to come out of the Netflix franchise.

Preacher: For a rape scene that was ridiculously tame. I wasn't expecting graphic, since it is AMC, but I'm sure they could have done more. Now I'm concerned about how they're going to deal with Allfather D'Aronique and the Messiah. I'm guessing we're just going to skip DeSade altogether.

"Strong" rumor has it that Halston Sage from The Orville is in line to play Dazzler in the upcoming X-Men: Dark Phoenix flick.

Marvel Studios has apparently hired Geneva Robertson-Dworet to replace Meg LeFauve and Nicole Perlman as the screenwriters for Captain Marvel. LeFauve and Perlman were hired back in April 2015, but it seems LeFauve's work on Disney's Gigantic kept them from ever finishing a script for Carol.

The whole thing seemed so out of character. One big joke. From what Herr Starr previously had been shown to be, how would he have let that happen? We already know he's some bad *** willing to do anything to climb the power ladder (side note, seems like he now has his eye on becoming God? No God means there's a spot to fill...). He was more than capable of killing all three men the moment he realized what they were there for. Yet he let's them bend him over, and stays there rolling his eyes in an "Oh boy, look what silly situation I'm in?" way...

I get the whole thing was a joke. He wanted to have some rape-play with some hookers, and instead has some male prostitutes bend him over. Karmic-justice type comedy. But it was so out of place for that character even with what little we had seen of him in the series so far.

Also, I'm disappointed that we didn't get to see where "holding a stick of butter under your chin" and "how long can you hold your breath" was leading to...

It's kind of his shtick. Comically bad things happen to him that are out of his control. Really, really bad things. If memory serves the next thing to happen is an incident that leaves him with a scar.

Sasha Lane will play Alice Monaghan in the Hellboy reboot. From what I remember she's an Irish girl who was kidnapped as a kid by fairies and eventually rescued by Hellboy and she retains some magical abilities. Julian McMahon has found his way onto the Runaway set as Jonah, "a pivotal player in the main characters’ rebellion against their parents." He was on Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency, and more embarrassingly was Doctor Doom in the 2005 Fantastic Four. Kirk Avocado Acevedo has been cast as Richard Dragon, a martial arts expert in the DCverse, as next season of Arrow's big bad. Also in casting news, Freeform is looking for two more people for Cloak & Dagger.

I was watching Cartoon Network yesterday after work. They have a new show about a kid growing up in a world where super heroes / villains are common (varying in strength / importance). But there was an old retired villain who started up a fight, and most of the lines said during the battle where actually lyrics from songs from Linkin Park, System of a Down, Korn, and Evanescence. Turns out the character was voiced by Jonathan Davis from Korn. And one of the other characters mocked the music with a "Was this really what we were like 11 years ago".

But then I thought. Some of those songs were from like... 1998. Almost 20 years ago. Then I almost felt old. Then I realized I was watching cartoons, so I felt like a kid again.

I think I had those pants. And by had I mean they might still be deep in my closet somewhere. I've been meaning to check out OK KO, but every time I try to watch Cartoon Network it's Teen Titans Go and I just can't take hours upon hours of that. That clip definitely makes it more appealing.

The Defenders is on Netflix, and between that, a little We Happy Few, and family my weekend is pretty much entirely accounted for. Also there's a nice Punisher teaser.

The Defenders: Well, I managed three episodes. The pacing feels better than in Iron Fist, mostly because they're no longer really in need of introducing characters. We know who they are, short of Sigourney Weaver, but even her character is pretty quickly established. Krysten Ritter and Mike Colter definitely have their characters locked, Charlie Cox continues being a great Matt (though he's got more time than the others), and it feels like they heard the complaints from last season so even Finn Jones' fight choreography has been worked on.

Of course, the problem with rapid characterization is how any "surprises" become a lot easier to recognize, which kind of hurts Weaver's Alexandria a little, though beyond that she's definitely killing it in the role. The third episode's White Privilege Speech felt out of place and unnecessary, but I imagine the target demographic for that particular scene would enjoy it. Though I will say that it does actually play into Iron Fist's character: How no matter what he does or where he goes he's always an outsider.

I think the initial reviews about how it was too slow were a bit overexaggerated. I guess the characters could have met a little sooner, considering this is only eight episodes instead of the standard thirteen, but they did start to connect by the end of the second so not too bad.

Anyway, next episode is the standard Fourth Episode Hallway Fightâ„¢, so we should see how the fight choreography really holds up.

Katee Sackhoff will be joining The Flash's next season as Amunet Black, the villainous "Blacksmith." According to the wiki she has the ability to "fuse organic and inorganic matter." According to EW it will be in the fifth episode, which will also feature Felicity Smoak so I'm not exactly expecting too much.

I'm almost thru episode 3 of Defenders. It's been pretty slow for me. Hoping it picks up soon.

Preacher: I'm hoping this thing doesn't devolve into a cliche "Holy Grail" story line. I've only watched the first 45 minutes of the episode (Had to go to work, so didn't finish the rest). But Jesus screws some woman, she has a baby, some of the disciples find out and "protect" it by beating the woman to death and taking the child to raise and protect until the second coming...

Tulip's storyline is dull. Preacher himself is a bit boring currently too. I'm hoping the Saint of Killers comes back and lights a fire under this thing's ass. Or something else good happens to keep it away from being a Dan Brown novel with a bit of Gore added.
