To be fair it was totally the victims' fault. You shouldn't go onto the field looking all delicious and what not. That's just asking for someone to try and eat you.

Maybe just make you take a safety course first. I mean we don't want to take away people's freedom, but on the other hand when a police officer is pointing a gun at you it's important to know how to handle your toy truck properly so the situation doesn't escalate like this.

This whole unfortunate incident could have been avoided with proper training, IMO.

The guy with the truck didn't even get shot. They shot the black guy laying on the ground next to him, with his hands in the air.

"Holy shit, he's got a truck! Quick, shoot a black guy!"

We'll never know for sure, since that part wasn't on video. For all we know he made a slight movement towards the truck, and the officer simply reacted according to his training.

My favorite part of the exchange:

the article wrote:
‘I still got my hands in the air, and I said, ‘No, I just got shot! And I’m saying, ‘Sir, why did you shoot me?'
and his words to me, he said, ‘I don’t know.'”

Certainly not opposed to things like that -- but I wouldn't call that a "workshop" where the implication is that blacks just need to learn how to act around police.

The word "workshop" was probably not the best choice, but yes, this is more or less what I was talking about. When you only know police as the people who stop and ticket/arrest you, and the people you see in news articles shooting people, you don't see them as human, but a part of a bigger machine grinding you down. If you are given the opportunity to interact with them socially, you'll discover that they are actually people, just like you are. And your perspective will chance, and maybe even your interpretation of their actions will change as well.

Would you have positive feelings if you were always stopped and frisked like a criminal?

Here's the problem though. Unless you know people who are police, or go out of your way to interact with police, aren't the only interactions you're *ever* going to have with them be of that nature? A police officer either stops you or does not. if every time a police officer stops you, you consider it some kind of violation of your rights, then that's going to form your entire opinion of the police. Somewhat by definition, if a police officer stops you, he suspects you of some form of violation of the law, and thus will "treat you like a criminal".

Honestly, how you respond to this situation has a massive effect on how pleasant or unpleasant the stop is. And in this case, it's something that builds on itself. If you assume the cop has bad intentions towards you, you're going to be very negative towards him. You're going to question why he stopped you, be argumentative with him, etc. And he's going to interpret this as you being a potential threat, and be more likely to be on guard towards you. You'll sense that and be on guard towards him. And the whole situation escalates. And when that happens, the odds of someone getting hurt increase dramatically.

And yeah, going into the situation upset that the mere act of stopping you means he's "treating me like a criminal", probably isn't helpful.

No, the problem is that I'm never frisked when stopped by police (and I'm very, very rarely stopped by police). The black experience isn't the same.

It's always fun watching sheltered suburban white people telling everyone how they understand race issues better than everyone actually involved. It's clearly their faux pas for being shot at.

Have any of these protestors even tried being a middle class middle aged white guy? Because that's been working gangbusters for me.

You mean the black experience you view through the lens of the media? You get that most black people are very very rarely stopped by police too. And most of them aren't frisked when stopped either. If every time a white person was shot by a police officer it made the national news and resulted in days of rioting and protests, you'd think that the "white experience" with police was different than you do now.

Perception is not equal to reality.

1. You didn't answer the question.

2. You argue that by definition when a police officer stops you, it's out of suspicion of you breaking the law. At the same time, you say that innocent people who are stopped shouldn't immediately feel like they are being treated like a criminal.

The police interaction stats for middle class middle aged black men is pretty similar to that of middle class middle aged white men. It's almost like it's not actually about skin color...

You're 33% more likely to be pulled over if you're black than if you're white. You are 300% more likely to be searched/frisked during a traffic stop if you are black than if you are white.
