Heh.

Ergo, fighting for the "right" to use one in order to get married is oxymoronic. Even if by doing so, you gain some extra benefits, you're not actually gaining "freedom". You are losing it.
So, by your own twisted logic, we lost our freedom when we fought for our being independent? People lost their freedom when they fought against being treated like property?

You consistently fail to understand how opportunity costs work and how they influence people's decisions.
To be fair most people are terrible with opportunity costs, both in their own lives and also correctly judging the value of missed opportunities for others. On the plus side though, it gives us some vigorous political debates.

I honestly think that the problem Joph, is that you and I use different definitions of "liberty". To me, liberty is the state of not having to ask permission to do things. A marriage license is a permission slip. Ergo, fighting for the "right" to use one in order to get married is oxymoronic. Even if by doing so, you gain some extra benefits, you're not actually gaining "freedom". You are losing it.
They're still free to get married symbolically only, or not to do anything, they now just have one more option they didn't have before. They have not lost any options, they just have one more. What liberty have they lost?

You know that people can get married without involving the state right? It's just if you want the state to treat you differently because you're married you have to let the state know about it.

I just got married on Friday, and I did tell the state about it, but funnily enough I didn't feel like I was losing freedom. Well, ok, maybe, but not to the state :)
