Since this is the Seinfeld of threads anyway.....

I cycle through The Silmarillian/The Hobbit/Lord of the Rings more or less regularly.

I'm on the...hmm..3.5x13...carry the 1....

....45th(?) run through.

Disclaimer: I lost my copy of Silmarillion about 4 years back, so that slot gets filled with The Children of Hurin.

Ha, I was just reading something on Sarah Palin throwing a hissyfit over being tricked into an interview with Sacha Baron Cohen and pretending she had standards and was an actual politician.

I stopped..
Since I no longer GM M.E.R.P. games.. the only benefit of reading them is so I can spout (un-solicited) Rings trivia to my wife while we're playing LOTRO (amidst much eye-rolling).

I never even finished CoH.. I still mean to.. once I've finished ILLE HOBBITVS.

Amazon Studios is working on a Hobbitses tv series. Rumor has it it'll run at least five seasons, the first season will be about Aragorn, and be expensive as ****.

I used to read Tolkien on the regs, but awhile ago I got out of the habit of reading books.
Ever read Unfinished Tales? All I really remember is Narn i Hîn Húrin, it's been so long.

I just realized after reading this that I haven't read LoTR and it's associated back stories in years. I feel like I should, but I don't know if I can be bothered to spend the time rereading stuff I've read multiple times when I have a literal pile of books that I bought and haven't touched yet.

Oh well, at least there a few people still here awesome enough to know where my posting name came from.

I stop rereading the LoTR when it got to the point that I can almost recite long passages of each book from memory.

Some of the Tolkien Lost Tales books sit in boxes now and I'm not sure I'll get around reading them since I got tired of only getting the newest one each year for Christmas.

Anyway, I pop in to see how things have been going here since I got tired of seeing the same constant types of arguments between everyone with gbaji.

Should be interesting to see how he tries to defend Trump and the GOP Congress not being "Traitors" to their oath of Office after today's meeting and news conferance between Trump and Putin.

He also really twisted logic to the extreme with his defense of Rosanne Barr. I guess he's better at knowing the racist terms used for Mexican's since he lives so close to the border.

What is going on? I don't want to read about it.. I try to avoid the news.. headlines are enough to raise my bile regardless of context anymore..
Just perusing the news searches I don't really see any specifics other than "CAPITULATION TO THE DICTATOR"... What did he do? Or what was he expected to do that he didn't do or vice-versa? And more importantly why did anyone believe any of it anyway?

You spend a year telling the world that you believe someone over something, and then evidence comes out that that something is wrong, and then you try to tell people you still believe that someone over that something despite the evidence, then even your staunches supporters are going to raise an eyebrow.

But it's okay because if you just tell them, despite over a year of saying otherwise, that you just misspoke then it's okay.

The boyfriend of one of the factory floor workers shows up shortly after first break. He asks the supervisor if the operators had their break yet. Supervisor says, "Yes." The guy says, "Ok, guess I'll go check the cigarette trash." The guy walks over to the smoking entrance. Opens up one of those extinguishing cigarette disposal bins, grabs the used butts. Straightens them out, and proceeds to smoke what ever was left on them.

Has to be the most disgusting thing I've witnessed in person. And some woman on the shop floor kisses that. The guy returned at 12:30 after lunch and dug thru the cigarette disposal again.

Ugh. Setting aside the fact that someone else was smoking that ("aside from that, how was the play Mrs Lincoln?"), re-lit cigarettes are fucking vile. Even smoking a half cig out of my own ashtray was a desperation move back when I smoked.

We had a pedestal ashtray in the basement, occasionally one of our pothead friends would break it open for butts, but he was an a-hole and since we were bigger a-holes we started dumping beers in there.

Well, I can't say I witness a lot of truly disgusting things in person. I may see a lot of random youtube videos of disgusting things, but for the most part people I live with and am around are not vomittingly disgusting individuals. Cadavers when in school on field trips to local universities, but those aren't really disgusting from a medical education point of view. Road kill... animal *****... various child-related messes... obese people? Ugly people?

What exactly else am I supposed to be exposed to that? More so than the sight of someone digging through rotting piles of spent cigarette butts and garbage, with who knows what oral and other bacteria swarming around (Do you want to get herpes? Cause that's how you get herpes.), to put as many in their mouth as they can to get some nicotine fix they are too poor or cheap to do so some legitimate way?

When I was in New Jersey for a year I had to take the train to and from New York on the weekends because, right, like I'm going to stay in Jersey for the weekend? That being said, there's something about Trenton's air that just smells bad. I can't even describe it as anything other than "bad." Like trying to describe the color red to Bijou a blind person.

I don't know about Trenton specifically, but in my experience most of northeast Jersey is disgusting, a combination of industrial waste and tidal flat stench.

On the topic of strange coworkers...

There is one guy at work they call "Backward Reader" because he reads Japanese manga and leaves his books out on the tables in the break room. Bu that's not the weird part, just where he gets his nickname.

Instead, the weird part is, he leaves his food and personal items out on the break tables the whole shift. Spread out all over the place. Whole heads of broccoli and open bottles of ranch dressing (cap actually open and sitting on the table). Wallet, car keys, cash, credit cards, etc. Sometimes we go into the break room, and we see these items and we think he has to be fucking with people. There is no way someone would do this stuff just by accident or by ignorance.

The break rooms are open to all employees, and there are maybe 100 people overall that can go in/out of them at various times.

Yeah.. I thought about listing things... and realized a lot anything I had seen pretty much involves living near a big city, dealing with addicts, and working in mental health... figured it would be bad taste to go on about it (and likely illegal)
Then again. most don't involve hygiene rather than exploitation... so "disgusting" just has a different meaning...
(although the seeing the aftermath of a particular car accident also may apply..but I knew the person..)

Yeah.. other than that kind of stuff most of the gross-out disgusting HYGIENE stuff DID involve drugs in some way... and your Are talking about Nicotine which is Also a Drug...
So, yes, good sir, I thoroughly support your being disgusted by this.

Moral: Drugs are disgusting!

It's a case of: Failure to go to the extreme in one direction, is taken as an extreme in the other. If you don't fall over yourself proclaiming "Russian meddling" as the absolute utmost most important thing in the freaking Universe, then you are part of a vast Russian conspiracy or something. At the risk of repeating myself (again!), there was no more meddling by the Russians during the 2016 election than there was in 2012, or 2008, or 2004, etc... It's not like the Russian government paying people in the US to push messaging/propaganda is new. They've been doing it for decades. And yeah, Russian hackers exist. As so Chinese, and several other governments. Not new at all either. But if you really want to be selective, you can cherry pick just the bits you want and ignore the rest and create a narrative.

Which is what's going on.

Quote:

Again. Driven by the aforementioned narrative relating the common actions of Russia vis-a-vis our elections and propaganda efforts with "Meddling" and "Collusion". One leads to the other, which leads to folks even asking questions which would not otherwise be asked, making a meeting which would otherwise be completely normal and routine seem abnormal. Or even nefarious somehow.

You do realize that it's pretty normal when world leaders meet to not immediately run to the nearest camera and badmouth the other, right? They usually say things like "we had a productive meeting" and "we're building up trust and yadda yadda". It's what politics is about. Nothing new to see here. But Trump failing to do so is now interpreted as some kind of horrible thing. And that's before getting into the "demand that he condemn Putin for meddling whilst in the middle of a summit" situation.

The hysteria about this is what's remarkable to me.
