Strange memory error... strange solution?Follow

I could probably post this in the EQ2 forums, but the problem seems to be more hardware/software related than anything.

I'm using XP SP3, and have 3.25GB of Ram.

I used to get "Critical Error: Applicaiton Ran out of Memory when requesting XXXXXXX bytes (limit 2048 MB, current XXMB)" often, but only after a few hours of playing or lots of changing zones. After the latest update I got this error every time the game started. As soon as it started loading the character screen.

I tried a few things, closed down a bunch of background programs, etc. Nothing seemed to work. Searching online I found one forum that posted a solution, supposedly from Microsoft:
http://eq2.elements-guild.eu/forum/viewtopic.php?f=23&t=29

I was a bit hesitant to try it. I'm not exactly sure what it does. I tried to research what the 'switches' at the end did, but wasn't very sucessful.

I ended up trying it, and the game started right up. I'm not sure what exactly it did if anything... maybe it was just a coincidence? Any insight to the problem? I've heard it being caused by me using a 32bit OS, or being caused by me using a 32bit OS with a Nvidia 580 with the latest drivers, or it being a problem with the way EQ2 is programmed. I've had the same issues with Guild Wars 2. Once the program starts to use a lot of memory, the game crashes and tells me I'm out even though the error report says I have plenty of free memory.

The main problem you are running into is memory addressing. a Nvidia 580 GTX has at a minimum of 1.5 GB onboard video ram,. WIndows 32 bit of any version can only address 3.3 GB total memory registers, including the system ram and a portion of the video ram due to the CUDA engine. Essentially you were running out of address space. the /3GB switch tells windows 32 bit to kind of ignore any ram above 2GB in your system to prevent problems. You can read a bit more about it here. http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff556232.aspx

It is a fix of sorts, but it technically slows your computer down some. The real fix is to upgrade to a 64 bit browser. Especially in a gaming rig that has a 580 GTX in it. Avoid 64 bit XP though, there aren't drivers for it. Windows 7 is the preferred gaming platform at the moment, and ram is dirt cheap. Toss 8 or more GB ram in that same machine with a 64 bit OS and you'll be amazed at the performance boost you get in game.

I always thought I needed a different processor/motherboard if I wanted to upgrade to a 64 bit OS. This is my current processor. I'm not sure about the motherboard. That portion of computers has never been something I've researched.

I knew about the addressing limit, but didn't think it would cause this problem because the system seemed to know that I had a lot of free RAM and the page file.

So you think I could put Windows 7 on this machine?

I want to build a new computer, but am short on cash because I've chosen to upgrade my house instead.

Edit:
Upgrading would also let me use the latest DirectX...

Nope, you're good for 64 bit. The important part was "Instruction Set 64-bit" As long as it has that, youa re fine, and nearly every core 2 ont he planet except some of the very very early ones is 64 bit capable.

You could definitly put windows 7 64 bit on that machine. And it would be worth it,. The only tricky parts you may run into is you may need a bios update on your motherboard first (only ran into that once) and the sound card driver may be slightly difficult to locate. I can help with that though.

I think I'm going to pickup a copy of Windows 7, and buy 8GB of RAM, a new 1TB HDD, and a 128 or 256GB SSD. Backup all my large files onto the 1TB, remove my existing 750GB, put the SSD and 8GB RAM in an install Windows 7 on it.

I checked the link you had in the other thread about the 49$ 1TB HDD and was disappointed that it was out of stock, and this morning it was back in stock but the 50% off was gone :(

There should be some other large hard drive deals Friday or monday. For SSD's at the rate windows patches are growing, you'll want the 256GB, I reccopmmend a Samsung 830 or 840 for that at the moment, with a Crucial M4 in second place. mYour motherboard probably doesn't have 6GB / SATA ports so your drives will be a little slower than they could be regardless of which one you go with, but there won't be compatability issues.

edit: the 2TB ones are on sale for $99 this morning if that helps. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822148910 also the 256GB samsung 840 drives. http://promotions.newegg.com/NEemail/Nov-0-2012/Countdown_48Hr-20-m/index-landing.html?nm_mc=EMC-IGNEFL112012&cm_mmc=EMC-IGNEFL112012-_-EMC-112012-Index-_-E0-_-Get#special

I purchased it all today as I got home from work.

It was a little more than I expected to spend (due to the price of the SSD), but I think the items I bought will serve well. And the drives will last me beyond this one computer.

Damnit Kao, why did you have to go and point out the Newegg sales? I just ended up buying a new motherboard so I can finally have a board that supports SATA 6 Gb/s.

I dunno. As much business as I personally give them and direct their way they should damned well be giving me a sales commission at this point.

A little bummed that my package seems to have taken an extended vacation in New Jersey. At least I got some new games to keep me a bit busy while I wait for the hardware to arrive.

Got all my stuff in today, and am currently running Windows 7 on my SSD with my 2TB secondary. Doing a lot of driver installation right now.

Backing up my 750GB HDD was painfully slow. Luckily I only really wanted about 400GB of data off of it.

I haven't moved the OS image from the old SSD to the new faster one yet. I also need to finish rebuilding the secondary PC with the leftovers from the primary, since thats going to require a reload.

I just got my audio driver working. That one took the longest to find (but wasn't that hard). Now to test out a game...

Edit:
Man, Steam is a bandwidth hog. I set it up to download Skyrim while was installing all my software, and it took up all my bandwidth leaving nothing for my other software downloads until I paused it.

Edit2:
I have all my drivers except the config software for my keyboard.
I have an old Logitech Elite Keyboard, and unfortunately it looks like Logitech's iTouch software doesn't support 64bit. I don't get to use my nice little volume knob on my keyboard anymore :(

I'm sitting here installing a few hundred windows updates. I really don't enjoy reinstalling operating systems, but I figured it was best to go with a clean and fresh install. The SSD is making things go much much faster than any other install I've done. So far it's worth the money.

I'm almost used to everything. Except the newest Firefox... one thing bothers me.

I can't double click the empty tab bar space to open a new tab. It's Middle click now for some reason. Been searching for a solution, but the only ones seem to be unsupported addons.
