A coworker informed me I had a Venonat on my head earlier. He's gay, so I can say with certainty this game is for ******.

I'm rather interested in the game for a strategic marketing perspective. Nintendo has been very tight in controlling their prime IPs, and they made the decision to allow this mobile game to be made with a lot of trepidation and hesitancy. Phone games have largely decimated their stranglehold on the handheld market. I'm curious to see how this plays out for them because a large part of their recent strategic has been to move in directions that competitors aren't and can't duplicate. Say what you will about a derpy game like wii sports, you're only going to get that kind of experience on the Wii whereas PS, Xbox, all have a largely shared library of games.

With a phone as a gaming device, they don't have the advantage of being un-imitatable.

Nintendo partnered with a mobile company just this past year or so. I imagine they are well aware of the phone moving into their market, and are getting in on it.

Nintendo also has MiiTomo on mobile devices, which is basically a clever market research tool disguised as something that is barely a game.

Speaking of strategic marketing, Pokemon Go is a boon for certain local businesses. My family has traveled and spent a great deal of money in places we would have never dreamed of visiting had it not been for the game. I can imagine the overall effect this might have with thousands of other people doing what we're doing in this area alone.

We are considering going to Applebees for dinner sometime soon with a large group of friends and acquaintances for the soul purpose of taking total control over the gym there. Applebees being one of those places that would not even be considered before. I've always had this idea in my head that their food was no good, but then I realize I have never been there before and have no idea what kind of food they serve exactly.

So, I have never played a Pokemon game, but a few people are work got me into this one. I work in a hospital and there are a ton of Pokemon all over the place. I caught four of them just by walking through the parking lot to my car. There's a park just a few hundred feet down the road from where I work and there are two gyms and eight or so stops there, so I can play a bit when I'm at work and when I get off. The down side is that I live way outside of town and there is literally nothing there. I've even tried using the incense items to draw them to me at home, but all I've managed with that is pick up two or three per incense, which feels like a waste. Realistically, I can't play at all anywhere near my house, which is really making me lose interest.

Nope, neither of those, nor Yu Gi Oh, nor BeyBlade, etc. etc.

Go is fun so far, though, especially for someone who meant to try Ingress and never did. I have too many pokeballs, though; my inventory is full. Wish there was a way to sell your surplus.

Eeeeeeeh...

Most of me doesn't really care about this but a small part is curious if the church across the street from me is a gym. I'm tempted to download the game just to find out.

I'm vaguely curious whether I can find bird types down at the nearest KFC, if I'm being honest.

Ha ha, yeah. Really, I'll probably never play this. The idea is neat but I really just don't give a damn.

I do wonder a little bit though. In the last few days I've seen a number of people with their phones out wandering aimlessly around a nearby park. I can only guess it might be pokemon related.

That's just weird. Like saying you've never played a sports game. I can't really wrap my brain around the concept.

How do you get Diglett's phone number?

My wife decided that the game would be good for our youngest so we put it on our phones. I haven't done anything with it yet besides catch my obligatory Squirtle but I look forward to wandering blindly into a secure military facility and then being murder-raped by hobos dressed as MewTwo.

Well I broke down and tried it. It's kind of fun, though I don't know that it will hold my interest for very long.

Turns out the park and the church across the street from me are a pokestop and a gym respectively. Which I suppose explains all the people pulling into the park's tiny parking lot/basketball court and immediately leaving.

I work out in the sticks so there is absolutely nothing near me. Which is probably for the best -- I doubt I'd have time to catch Pokemon AND post on the internet from work.

My Facebook group for Team Valor members in our county has exploded to nearly 200 members. Every day I am finding myself going out to places I wouldn't normally to meet up with large groups of people in real life to gang up against tough gyms held by rival teams, then secure them. My life has been completely turned upside down by this app, and in a good way. I feel almost like some kind of community leader. Really, though, it's more like a cult. The two rival teams don't seem nearly as organized as we are. We pick up stray Valors wherever we go and assimilate them, and our FB group where we coordinate all our gatherings continues to grow rapidly. I expect to have a legion of something between 1000-1500 people by the end of the year at this rate.

The... propagation?... on this thing seems a little weird. Or slow. Went into town (very small town) and saw nothing on my screen which slightly surprised me because there's at least a post office and bank there. Thought I'd at least see something. Then drove off to a nature preserve. Walked a mile and saw nothing. Was about to get back into my car and write this thing off when all of a sudden a Venomat appears. I find and capture it and now the parking lot of the nature preserve is a Pokestop. I swirl it and get four more balls and see a Rat-whatever on my map and go get that. Then, on the way back to work, two locations I drove past on the way there now showed as Pokestops. I pulled into one (my wife was texting me anyway) and caught a caterpillar dude and a Pidgy from my car and went back to work. Made level 3, got some medal, etc.

Not that my tale of catching some low level Pokemon is exciting but I was surprised that everything that was barren before suddenly became active.

Edit: Also, it ate half my phone battery in an hour.

Depends on your connection, and how the servers are doing at that moment. They get overloaded a lot, especially during peak hours. You may have also been in an area where you weren't getting a very good connection.

Edit: Yeah the battery life is an issue. I turn down my back light any time I'm indoors and carry portable battery chargers and can stay out all day. I've seen some people with solar panels on their packs.

It seems to make pokestops pretty randomly. In my general area there are huge empty areas where I wonder, "why isn't [place] a pokestop", and then there's a nearby church which is SIX pokestops. The church, the parish, a statue of saint someone or other, a stained glass window, and two different memorials to the same former deacon. All individual pokestops within about 100 feet of each other. Great for stocking up on items, but so damn weird.

Yeah. It's weird how that works. It's like a big conspiracy to get younger generations to go to church.

On a more serious note: I wonder how long this will last. I've been seeing a lot of videos like this:

--and I wonder. Is this a fad? How long will it be before people settle back down and retreat back to their dreary former life of staying indoors and waiting around for the next shift at whatever shitty job they have? The longer this goes on, the more of an impact it will have on our course in history. It's like we have shifted into some alternate reality where small businesses are making more money, young people will be more active in elections, and Pokemon is more popular than internet ****.

More on this in this video I found while looking through links:

I've been wondering that too. For as huge as it is right now I don't see the current mania lasting very long past the summer. It'll probably slow down a lot once vacations are over and people go back to school, and even more as it gets colder. Who really wants to do all this in the freezing cold? Also, eventually people will just get bored, especially those who are just playing it casually.
