I've ported into Butcherblock Mountains hundreds of times but this only happened once. I cast the port spell and when I arrive in Butcherblock I'm waaaaay up in the sky about as high as you can be. Then I start falling, real fast. BAM! I die.

I port back to find my corpse and then consider whether I'll just loot it and eat the death or try to convince a cleric to come here and rez me. (This was long before druids got rez spells and even before merc clerics.) Well, I can't locate my corpse. I looked all around the druid ring and even in nearby areas no corpse. I type /target sippin's corpse and got a response like "out of range." Oops. My corpse is beneath the world!

So I /petitioned. Here's one of the great things about the OLD game. In about 5 minutes a GM shows up and I explain what happened. He smiled, gave me some milk and cookies (I think... they always did that back then) and advised me to wait a few minutes he'd bring my corpse up from the Norrath Netherworld. Sure enough, he did, then gave me a 100% rez, apologized for the undeserved death and wished me Happy Hunting.

Yeah. Actually interacting with a GM nowadays? forgetaboutit. I only ever had to petition a few times.

As a rouge I spent an inordinate amount of time raising picklock on the locked doors at Befallen. Sooo...

Some kid was casting Eye of Zomm and then flying it down the well to the third floor. Of course doing so would create a massive train to the kid who was standing at the zone-in line. Piles of player corpses. I petitioned. Ten minutes later the GM caught the kid in the act. I think he was whisked off to some GM prison zone.

When you think about it what's changed the game forever (among many things) are two things:

Corpse-summoning to the Guild Lobby

Your gear staying with you after death

Those two changes completely altered gameplay. Dying used to REALLY hurt. If you couldn't recover your corpse you'd lose every piece of armor and jewelry you had worked so hard to acquire. I know players who quit the game in frustration when they couldn't recover their corpse. Despite these changes being in the game for years now I still find myself exercising caution at times in exploring because of that nagging fear in the back of my mind that I'd have a brutal time getting back to my corpse if I died in certain locations. When I get aggro and I'm running and not sure I'll escape I STILL HIT MY /LOC BUTTON so if I die I'll have a location reading on approximately where! These are old habits going back to a gameplay time completely unknown to many current players. That's when "terror" was in the game and I don't mean the Plane of Fear monster!

Yeah, necro corpse summoning was around from the beginning but it was no easy fix. You had to find a high-level necro and convince him to follow you to the zone in which you died. And he would probably want money, particularly since the spell required an expensive reagant, maybe more money than a low-level toon could afford. At least this encouraged what used to be the core goal of the game: social interaction between players. Now you don't need a necro, just some plat and a visit to the NPC corpse summoners in the Guild Lobby.

That was why I bought the corpse locator. Think I still have that somewhere!
I remember when we used to carry plat for Monks to the bank and bring them less heavy change for a price!!:-)

My Wiz was porting people like mad and you could make a living off of that.

Clerics used to come way out to wherever with you to rez you, they are usually the kind of People who like to be needed and like to help, but not much use now.

We used to need each other.

as to the OP, although EQ has changed a lot (and yes, many changes for the good), it still is a frikkin great game to play :-)

You speak of the beloved chipped bone rod, sir!

I always thought tracking classes like ranger, druid and bard should be able to craft chipped bone rods -- fashioned from foraged roots and sticks and imbued with enchanter love.

Nah, finding corpses is a proper necro/sk talent. And evil bards, if such existed. Druids and rangers are too life-affirming to be able to craft devices to locate dead bodies!

Yeah, you're right. I'm wishcasting stuff onto old characters. Stuff I would've found enjoyable. Like a dowsing rod for free water pods. Yeah, that's more druid and ranger territory :P

"And evil bards, if such existed."

The player base had those as an option -- DE Bard. But noooooooooooooooo. No, instead, the majority voted for WE BLs with shrubberies...

I believe I voted for DE bards. Those would have been, in the immortal words of B&B, "k----ool, doh, huh, huh"

Back to the original thread theme, after Kunark came out I made the long hard journey to Lake of Ill Omen and thought I had discovered paradise. However for good toons there's no place there to bank. The windmill had a vendor and was a good gathering spot and sorta safe, although dangerous skells could sometimes wander in, probably due to chasing a player than zoned or died. Nonetheless it was the closest thing to a safe place for good players in LOIO. In those days coin had weight and when you had 1000 pennies on you, this weight started hampering your movement speed and fighting ability. I remember a dorf player would sometimes set himself up as a bank there, offering to exchange coin. Of course he charged a hefty service fee. For a long stretch one summer long ago he was there most every day most of the day because I'd see him whenever I logged in randomly to kill an hour or two. Now I guess you could do this mostly afk so he didn't need to literally sit at the keyboard doing nothing else all day long. Good thing too because nobody's getting rich by charging a fee to convert copper into gold or plat! But it's a good example of social interaction possibilities which have been wiped off the map by game changes since the Old Days.

Yes, a very good example. And I also snuck (low level but had just learned there was an Ebon Mace or something falling off a random Skeletal Cook in LOIO's castle). And managed to stay there without death, fighting off random skeles...and then a Ranger I'd made friends with in our Blackburrow stripling days showed up clearing everything out and saying hi, hey. And I told him dude, I've been camping this for weeks. It should be mine. And he said "okay" and then the Cook spawned and dropped the item and then he killed it and looted it and got gone. I wasn't even terribly naive at the time but it was still a bit of a sad thing. And he even later asked me for plat to help buy his new Ranger things. I'm too nice and made excuses. I'm always too nice.

Same as in WoW even, as a much older player, as well as with a buddy who well, was younger but I don't judge that. But he was always a bit evil, I was a rogue who basically was skilled enough (and on my Pally and Warrior and Hunter alts) even as a loner to kill and camp any single person in that server forever if he ganked me or was otherwise a ****, camping others, or killing lowbies. I got over my too-nice attribute there. Camp an ******* until a buddy helps. Then most times camp his *** too. Then a whole guild shows up and at that point even if I'm antisocial, enough lowbies would be annoyed at not being able to turn in quests or whatever that this would cause a kerfuffle and big old proper WORLD PVP. Which I guess also might be passe now.

I guess in this day and age the general zeitgeist is that online games should only be happy and never insulting. I'm not a disgusting conservative or Republican but trash-talk in game and on forums, and dirty deeds should still exist in a proper game or sub-game. How else is one to bring actual angry emotions to it? Even some Starcraft 2 players don't just robotically tap and eyeball-50 times-second. Some of them have real beefs with others. That's when it's best. And even better in much less skill-based and objective games than SC2.

If Guilds and individuals and tribes/races didn't exist, then MMOs would be utterly useless. People [well most] need tension and identity, even if virtual.
