I'm sure what I have to say will seem obvious to experienced players, but in case there are any new players trying this as a Hunter, here is how I soloed it as a 15 Hunter.
First, like any good woodsman, know the territory. As has been said, as soon as you click on the Brigand-Informer (the quest NPC), three Southern bandits will attack ... two melee and one archer. They will attack from the slope NE of the NPC's position.
Lay your trap in on that side of the NPC. When the bandits attack, let the trap capture one of the melee and focus your fire on the archer. The NPC will attack the melee who reaches him first.
My trap held the first melee bandit until I had killed the archer and helped the NPC finish off the second melee. However, by that time, the NPC was nearly dead, so it is imperative that you keep the last bandit focused on you.

'The meeting place is by a grey rock in a small stand of trees directly north of Bree-town.
'If my spy has no news to share, we will need to find another means of learning Sharkey's plans.'

Grimbriar is in the Southern Bree-fields.
The spy's notes further supported the brigand's letter, verifying that Sharkey is no brigand himself, but an influential man of the south. Grimbriar should be warned.
Notes
The Spy is found South of the Boar Dens, but north of Bree on a ridge at 28.0S, 52.3W.
When you click on him, you have to defend him from 3 Brigands.
