    Humfrey Rumming
    Chest of the Bat

Bestowal

'Yes, yes, naturally I know all about the salamanders. I'm a great lore-master, am I not? Or am I? Ha! Little joke there. Of course I am. All the Wise know the name of Humfrey Rumming! But I can't divulge the great secrets of lore to just anyone, can I? No, no, no, no, no! Not at all! And how can Humfrey Rumming tell if you are worthy? How, indeed?

'Let's try a bit of a challenge, shall we? I have hidden a number of chests all about this island. One of them contains the answer to my riddle. Take this key -- but beware, it can only be used once! Here's the riddle:

'Fluttering shreds rent from the fabric of night;
Fell shrieking beasts that shun the sun's light;
Dwelling in darkness they fly hidden from sight;
Clouds obscure the stars when first they take flight.

'It's not easy, is it? Oh, no! But if you explore this island from top to bottom, and from bottom to top, you are sure to find the solution!'

Background

The lore-master Humfrey Rumming must know something about the salamanders of Tyl Ruinen, but he seems to be hiding some sort of secret. There must be some way to get him to tell what he knows.

Objectives

Objective 1
Solve Humfrey's riddle

The riddle goes:

Fluttering shreds rent from the fabric of night; Fell shrieking beasts that shun the sun's light;
Dwelling in darkness they fly hidden from sight;
Clouds obscure the stars when first they take flight.

Objective 2
Bring token of the Bat to Humfrey Rumming

Notes

The obvious answer to the riddle is "Bats" but there is not a single bat on the island.

Each of the chests is named, which explains how you can be looking for bats when there are none! Which chest appears where appears to be random for each player performing the quests, but there should be A chest at the noted locations. All three of the quests from Humfrey use these chests.

  • Chest of the Bat - [12.7S, 72W] located on the south east of the island near beach
  • Chest of the Bear - [12.9S, 70.7W]
  • Chest of the Cave-claw - in Tollobel (the ruins in front of Humfrey)
  • Chest of the Dragon - On the shore due East of Tollobel.
  • Chest of the Drake - In a Salamander nest at [12.6S, 71.7W]
  • Chest of the Hendroval - South side of the big rocks on the shore east of Tollobel.
  • Chest of the Lynx - [12.3S, 71.8W]
  • Chest of the Hawk - Western-most jut of the island, on the west side of the large rocks.
  • Chest of the Orc - North of Tollobel.
  • Chest of the Warg - Due south of Rummings at [12.3S 72.0W]
  • Chest of the Worm - On the smaller of the 2 isle-lets of the southeast of Tyl Ruinen

You will know you have found the wrong box because the key will shatter in your hand as you pick it up. A wrong "guess" fails the quest and you have to go back to Humfrey and get it again (no cooldown).

I finally found the Chest of the Bat in the Salamander nesting area south of Tollobel. Follow the shore clockwise and swim around the rocks. Chest was just in from the water's edge in between the big rock outcroppings.

Remember, the above-described locations only tell you where you will find A chest, not necessarily the one you want.
